PEERS® Social Groups - Surrey

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PEERS® Social Groups are based on the PEERS® curriculum, an evidence-based social skills intervention program for motivated preteens, teens and young adults who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. During each weekly group session, teens and young adults are taught important skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in sessions during social activities. Parents and Social Coaches will be included in a chat time at the end ofa  group session. Information regarding the PEERS® program can be found at www.semel.ucla.edu/peers

 

WHO ARE THE GROUPS FOR:

  • Preteens between the ages of 10-12 and teens between the ages of 13 – 18 who are interested in learning how to make and maintain friendships
  • Young adults 18+ who are interested in learning how to make and maintain friendships
  • Teens and young adults must be motivated and committed to participating in weekly group sessions

 

WHAT THE TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS WILL LEARN:

  • How to use appropriate conversation skills, find common interests by trading information, choose appropriate friends and use electronic communication
  • How to appropriately use humour and be a good sport
  • How to enter and exit conversations between peers
  • How to handle rejecting, teasing, and bullying
  • How to handle rumours and gossip
  • How to be a good host during get-togethers
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements and change a bad reputation

 

TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS COULD ALSO LEARN (if interested):

  • How to find and choose good romantic partners, how to let someone know you like them and ask them out on a date, and appropriate dating etiquette

 

WHEN:

  • Weekly groups will run on Mondays for 1 hour from September – June with an expectation that you are committed to the entire duration of the group. Times to be determined.

 

COST:

  • The cost of each group session is $125/session
  • Autism Funding can be used for this program.

We are required to have consent from all legal guardians in order to provide services. If this is a concern, please let us know as soon as possible.
If sole guardianship has not been established then both parents are required to provide signed consent for services (eg. parents are separated or divorced). Please note that ABLE Clinic is not able to provide psychological services if guardianship is in active dispute and all parties do not consent to services.
